The series of events unfolded earlier in the week when police learned that a 2017 Nissan Altima, stolen from a Dunkin' Donuts in Allentown, might be in the Middletown area, said New York State Trooper Steven Nevel.

On Thursday, state police patrolling Route 17 in the Town of Wallkill observed the vehicle. Upon trying to stop the vehicle, it fled, Nevel said.

Troopers pursued the vehicle into the city of Middletown where it struck a City of Middletown marked police car, he added.

The operator of the vehicle was taken into custody and has been identified as John Redner, 44, of Middletown.

Redner was treated at Orange Regional Medical Center for minor injuries. A Middletown City Police Officer was also treated at ORMC for minor injuries and released.

Redner, an NYS parole absconder, was charged with criminal possession of stolen property and criminal possession of a controlled substance.

He was also charged with unlawfully fleeing police, resisting arrest and driving while ability impaired by drugs, state police said.

Redner was arraigned in the Town of Wallkill Court and remanded to the Orange County Jail without bail.

State Police at Middletown were assisted by the City of Middletown Police Department, State Police at Wurtsboro, the Orange County District Attorney's Office and the Sullivan County District Attorney's Office.
